Dhawal Ashar is a Head, Sustainable Cities & Transport program at the World Resources Institute, India’s Ross Center for Sustainable Cities and Transport program. His work integrates transport engineering and urban design to improve safety and sustainability in cities. Dhawal works out of WRI’s Mumbai office, and manages road safety projects in several cities and India and South-East Asia. Dhawal is a founder member and trustee of the Equal Streets Movement – a sustained community movement towards the provision of better and safer cycling infrastructure in Mumbai. This is an open streets movement inspired by Ciclovía in Bogota.

Dhawal has over 12 years of experience working as a transportation planner and engineer. Prior to joining WRI, he was working as a Transportation Engineer with TATA Consulting Engineers, where he was responsible for activities ranging from transportation planning to the detailed design of roads in greenfield development projects.

Dhawal holds a bachelor’s in Civil Engineering from Mumbai University, India, and a master’s in Civil Engineering from Virginia Tech University, USA, with a specialization in Transportation Planning.
